Runaway Jury (Widescreen Edition)Based on the bestseller by John Grisham, Runaway Jury is a slick thriller that’s exciting enough to overcome the gaps in its plot. The ultimate target has been changed: Grisham’s legal assault on the tobacco industry was switched to the hot-button issue of gun control (no doubt to avoid comparison to The Insider) in a riveting exposé of jury-tampering. Gene Hackman plays the ultra-cynical, utterly unscrupulous pawn of the gun-makers, using an expert staff and advanced electronics to hand-pick a New Orleans jury that will return a favorable verdict; Dustin Hoffman (making his first screen appearance with real-life former roommate Hackman) defends the grieving widow of a gun-shooting victim with idealistic zeal, while maverick juror John Cusack and accomplice Rachel Weisz play both ends against the middle in a personal quest to hold gun-makers accountable. It’s riveting stuff, even when it’s obvious that Grisham and director Gary Fleder have glossed over any details that would unravel the plot’s intricate design. –Jeff Shannon

In their first film together, screen legends Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman face off in this electrifying nail-biter about a ruthless jury consultant who’ll do anything to win. With lives and millions of dollars at stake, the fixer plays a deadly cat-and-mouse game with a jury member (John Cusack) and a mysterious woman (Rachel Weisz) who offer to “deliver” the verdict to the highest bidder. IT’S ONLY ME, BUT: by Joan M. Mckeown
hACKMAN AND hOFFMAN WERE GREAT TOGETHER FOR THEIR FIRST TIME. FAST PACE AND RIVOTING . GREAT MOVIE. JENNIFER BEALS HAS A UNCREDDITED ROLE IN THE MOVIE. JOHN CUSAK IS EXCELLENT. JM

Passable Entertainment by Bradley F. Smith
Big glossy Hollywood entertainment. Fun to watch? Yeah, I guess. Thought this thing had a few plot holes though, such as why the Hackman character wouldn’t go after the Cusack character and his girlfriend after being double-crossed. Also, totally implausible plot, Grisham or not, I thought. Rather silly when all is said and done. But That’s Entertainment!

Hackman is scum. Cusak and Weisz, the latent heroes. by G. Patrick Navarro
Because of the fact that Dustin Hoffman plays the attorney for the Plaintiff in a wrongful death lawsuit (her husband, an attorney; Dylan McDermot - short cameo at beginning of movie) against a gun manufacturer; he does [mostly] everything by the book. So it’s easy to somehow gloss over his character, since he comes across as the knight in shining armor for all the people who’s loved ones have died due to handgun violence.

Gene Hackman on the other hand, is the scheming, conniving, cold and calculating Rankin Fitch; the jury consultant for the gun manufacturer attorneys. It’s easy for his character to be more dominating in the film, as he weaves some pretty evil, unscrupulous, coercive manipulations and intimidation of jury-influencing and tampering. And he has at his command, a plethora of seemingly callous “technicians” (automatons) to assist him. With one of his techs, a real scumbag, “get-it-done no matter what” type (i.e. via physical violence, if need be). Oh, he gets his just desserts from Wiesz (so I spoiled some of it - so what).

All the while John Cusak as Juror #9; Nick Easter and his cohort in “jury-tampering” Rachel Wiesz; Marlee, worked their side in the manipulation (a.k.a Blackmail) of both the Plaintiff and Defendant attorneys to swing the verdict in one or the others favor (for money, of course). Cusak seemingly manipulates part of the jury, but in the end he knows that they’ll decide on their on account. Nick, being on the inside, with the Jury. Marlee, on the outside working the attorneys.

A surprise ending (though not really unpredictable), in which Hackman really gets it “stuck to him”. He never knew what hit him. The real surprise is how Nick (Cusak) and Marlee (Weisz) screw Hackman (Fitch) while they come out smelling like roses (a little richer, and a little worse for wear) for their efforts; although still legally immoral. But not to them. They’ve played this game before.

Bias here makes plot devoid of any basic logic by N. Wilson
In full disclosure, I am adamantly pro-gun and believe that gun control kills far more people than gun legalization. Residents of high-gun crime, “gun-free” Washington DC, or students in the “gun free zones” of Virginia Tech, Columbine High School, etc. have experienced firsthand why a disarmed populace is at greater risk of gun violence. Banning guns will only make the black market for guns go through the ceiling, and the only people who will have guns who aren’t police or military will be those who are willing to break the law to possess them, as banning drugs hasn’t made them disappear either. If guns weren’t manufactured domestically, there would still be millions of guns floating around, even ignoring international manufacturers - the black market and the criminal underworld would thrive off of guns being banned. That also means a criminal can rob your house, harm your family, etc. knowing that you won’t have a convenient means of self-defense. My point is GUN CONTROL IS NOT LOGICAL.

This is not an editorial forum and I will no longer expound upon my political beliefs, but this movie “The Runaway Jury” is very much an editorial movie, and it uses fiction to go into realms of fantasy and fallacy where they don’t even have to deal with real world facts and logic when making their point. They set up a convenient counter-balance where the noble gun control lawyer (Hoffman) refuses to compromise his principles and give into blackmail vs. the ruthless corporate bigwigs and their evil jury selecter (Hackman) who will win by hook or by crook, robbing and burning apartments, blackmailing jurors, etc. This is a huge strawman fallacy, which enables them to manipulate the movie audience because we are not remotely sympathetic to the evil gun lobby and especially to Hackman. It ignores the fact that Hoffman winning this case would make the sky rain money for gun control lawyers, and indicates that the gun control groups and their representatives are pure in their intentions while the gun lobby is motivated purely by greed.

Because of this manipulation, we easily miss many failures in elementary logic.

1.) The defense lawyer would have been the worst defense lawyer in the world from the little we see of him. There are many angles he could have taken - for instance, “had even one employee at the company had a concealed firearm made by the gun manufacturer, the killer could have been stopped dead in his tracks. The plaintiff’s husband might still be alive today.” Or what about “there is zero way for any company, regardless of industry, to control how their product is misused or resold by anyone other than the company themselves.” The movie briefly mentioned that the gun company had no influence over the illegal resale of their weapon, but that was a minor bone thrown only to keep the tension of the plaintiff losing in the plot instead of something that was fleshed out as the core argument by the defense. We hardly even hear any logical arguments from the defense, maybe because the writers decided that they could hurt their point. Instead, in the trial, we see a.) the gun company has paid for a vacation for the guy who legally sold the gun to the guy who illegally sold the gun to the guy who killed the plaintiff’s husband (that’s the primary argument or the industry’s “complicity” by the prosecution…really…) b.) the gun lobby has through probably devious means somehow managed to make the prosecution’s witness not show up in court. c.) a hapless gun executive who can’t make logical arguments to defend his product other then screaming about standing for the 2nd Amendment and d.) hardly any arguments from the defense, and when they were there, they were usually unconvincing.

2.) Why would a jury member be able to win over with niceness jurors who have been ruthlessly blackmailed by the “evil” gun lobby? Surely the adulteress under the threat of having her adultery revealed, the AIDS-diagnosed guy who had been threatened that his secret would become public, and the lady who was told to either side with the gun lobby or her husband will go to jail for life for bribery are going to suddenly side against the gun lobby because John Cusack was buddy-buddy with them? That was conveniently set up to make the gun lobby look evil, but was conveniently ignored in deliberations when they somehow forgot about the blackmail.

3.) If Hackman’s character was an even remotely talented jury selecter, surely he would have picked more than two jurors who see the illogic in such a frivolous lawsuit. All he needed was five and the prosecution’s case fails. But most of the jurors were already against the gun lobby before Cusack even opened his mouth. Once he did, they were able to deliberate with very little debate, despite the fact that they all knew the immense gravity of their decision, they called for a vote without a thorough fleshing out of the pros and cons. The niceness of Cusack’s character to the other jurors isn’t suddenly going to make the other jurors change their worldview on guns, basic logic, etc.

4.) And I guess the two masterminds aren’t going to get ramrodded by the IRS when they donate $15 million from an account in the Cayman Islands to their poor town that went broke from engaging in a similar frivilous lawsuit against the gun industry?

These are just a few of the many bizarre leaps of faith and logical missteps that, in their ineptness, reveal the true agenda of the movie. The writers take a side, draw the audience to their side via careful manipulation, omit any real dissenting arguments, turn the opponents into the strawmen that they want them to be pigeonholed as, has the ideal outcome which is connotated as heroic and see sweet revenge against the “bad guys” (whom we have no sympathy to as viewers).

Luckily this is ineptly done and blatant to us gun control opponents, but I worry that some fencesitters on the issue would take the movie as-is and assume that this is really what the debate is all about - the evil, ruthless greed-driven gun lobby vs. the honest, decent gun control movement. Please see through the facade, or better yet, don’t waste your time. The producers should have just stuck with the much better and more logical storyline in the book instead of trying to make it into a semi-thriller (by changing the subject from tobacco to guns) and going political in a biased way that will only anger at least half the audience.

Runaway Performances by F. S. L’hoir
I have no idea whether juries in the real world can be corrupted as this jury in the reel world is, but “Runaway Jury” is a riveting thriller that ought to capture the interest of the viewer from beginning to end, whether one buys into all the plot points or not.

Its success as a genre-film derives from the superlative cast, which is headed by Dustin Hoffman in the role of the honest but savvily down-to-earth attorney (with shabby suit and a carefully planted mustard dab on his tie) who is suing the big gun companies on behalf of the wife of a victim of a mass murder; and Gene Hackman as the ruthless (and expensively dressed) jury consultant, who does not give a fig for the victims, but merely wants to win big on behalf of his even bigger clients, no matter how low he has to stoop to do it. Hoffman and Hackman are supported ably by John Cusack and Rachel Weisz, both of whose characters have hidden agendas.

Although the film is worth watching for its suspense-factor alone, the performances of Hoffman and Hackman, who confront each other in the old-fashioned wood-paneled men’s washroom of the court, lift “Runaway Jury” from the level of a conventional court-room thriller. This scene, which lasts several minutes, allows these two cinematic masters to pull out all the stops, as it were, of their craft. It is so rare nowadays to get a full-blown scene–more reminiscent of one in a stage play–between two actors of their calibre.

The settings of pre-Katrina New Orleans–the French Quarter and the Garden District–also contribute to the film’s ambience.

Every once and a while, I sit down and watch the DVD of a film that I missed in the theatre the first time around. Many, I pass on to my friends; “Runaway Jury,” I did not.

The NetThe Net, the first of Hollywood’s big cyberthrillers of the mid-1990s, was also the most successful, thanks in large part to the natural appeal of star Sandra Bullock. Still riding high from Speed and While You Were Sleeping, Bullock plays a computer expert victimized by sinister cyberforces who steal her identity for reasons unknown. It’s a clever combination of high-tech paranoia and Hitchcockian references (including Jeremy Northam as a romantic stranger named Devlin, after Cary Grant in Notorious). Film historians may look back someday on films like this–Roger Ebert calls them “hacksploitation”–to see what they reveal about our society’s reaction to the increasing role of technology in our lives, just as we now study the fears of Communism and the atom bomb reflected in films of the 1950s. You’ve got terror! by Brian Moore
I loved this movie so much I downloaded it off Limewire and emailed it to twenty-thousand of my best friends!

what a waste. by L. R.
The movie wasn’t good and the disc they sent didnt even work. It would cost me more to send it back than the actual movie cost. NOT worth the money.

Winning Performance! by J. Eaton
I first came across this movie over a month ago, and now I am on Amazon buying it because it is not sold in any stores in my area due to it being from 1995. This is an excellent cyber-thriller. I am a computer analyst myself and technology has changed a lot since then; however, Sandra Bullock blows this part out of the water. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Sandra Bullock, Suspense, Thriller, and Technology.

Just watch it for Sandy. by ADRIENNE MILLER
The Net starring Sandra Bullock was a great thriller when it was released in 1995. Bullock was at the height of her career and this film was probably only a hit for that reason alone. And yes I was and still a huge fan of Bullock but I have to admit The Net is very dated and silly now. The plotline is a little far fetched and contrived but Bullock’s spunky and fearless performance saves this boring little film.

Crazy 56K action! by Jason Elin
The Net (1995) is a movie that may have been ominous and clever back when computers were relatively unknown and 56K modems were lightning fast, but within ten years, much like ten-year old computer technology, it has become severely dated.

Angela Bennett (Sandra Bullock) is a reclusive, paranoid computer expert who fixes virus problems for game manufacturers. The highlight of her evenings consists of pizza ordered online and some cyber-banter with guys living in their mom’s basements. Her idea of a dream-man is, “butch, beautfiul, brilliant, Captain America meets Albert Schweitzer who spends all day dashing into fray while making the world safe for democracy, at night play Bach cantatas while curing cancer”

She has recently discovered a new, cheesy game called Mozart’s Ghost. When in the program, she holds down ctrl-shift and clicks on a pi symbol icon that takes her to secret information on secure mainframes throughout the internet. Oh, and this whole thing is on an old-school 3.5 inch floppy. Riiiiiiiight.

Well, no big deal because she’s going on a beach vacation the next day, and she could care less about the program or the virus. Of course, she’s not safe from those who would cyberstalk her just because she’s on a remote beach. Their plan to take care of Angela Bennett is to accomplish the first case of identity theft in history, starting a trend that would soon scare thousands of old woman who would otherwise fall victim to Nigerian prince scammers needing financial “help”.

In the end, Angela has to match wits with the bad guys, preposterously cracking a billionaire’s security system - called Gatekeeper - used to protect major corporations, DOD health care records, airlines, and banks.

The plot’s so convoluted it’s hardly worth describing, except to say that it’s set in humid Florida and involves a respected high school teacher (Matt Dillon–yes, Matt Dillon as a teacher!) who is faced with accusations of rape by a student (Denise Richards, from Starship Troopers) who had been giving him the kind of attention most people would consider improper for such a “nice” young lady. Another student (Neve Campbell) raises a similar charge against the teacher, and that’s when a police officer (Kevin Bacon) begins to investigate the allegations. Just when you think the movie’s gone overboard with its shameless sex and absurdly twisted plot, in drops Bill Murray as an unscrupulous lawyer (of course) to spice things up with insurance scams and welcomed comic relief. As directed by John McNaughton (who has a way of making just the right moves with this kind of film noir melodrama), Wild Things is a bona fide guilty pleasure–the kind of movie you may be ashamed to enjoy, but what the heck, you’ll enjoy it anyway. –Jeff Shannon

Just like the original but much prettier. by Hedchekr
I really liked Wild Things the story is good. So when they re-released this on blu-ray I of course picked it up.
Its has really good picture quality. If you liked this movie but never bought it the blu-ray version is the way to go.

Great and easy transaction–fast shipping and product arrived in great condition. I would definitely recommend this seller!

Best movie ever! by B. Shelton
This is such a fantastic movie. I watch it all the time. Love all the twists in it. Must watch!

Better than expected by A. Vaughan
I never would have thought that this movie had scenes that could show off the power of 1080 but i was sure wrong. Any of you who remember the pool scene will know that just that in hd was well worth it. Along with all the other veiws of florida that are in the movie.

well worth the money

Beats “Basic Instinct” by a mile by Jonathan B. Rollins
This is the best “camp” erotic film in the past quarter century, hands down. Not only is it a guilty pleasure for viewers of lesbian acts, but it also shows Kevin Bacons acting skills, which aren’t the highest to begin with (he was also the Executive Producer), which probably explains why we get a gratuitous shot of his penis.
I think the true shinning point of the film, is Bill Murray’s off-script banter as Matt Dillons laywer. How they got him into this blatant flesh romp is a total wonderment to myself, but without him, I’d be laughing for ALL the wrong reasons.
If you’re looking for beautiful scenery of both Florida, and the nakedness of Denise Richards and a rather good looking for her age Theresa Russell, then you will never miss with this over-the-top indulgence in camp film making history.
A true gem that beats “Basic Instinct”…hands down!

Halloween II”You can’t kill the boogeyman,” explains John Carpenter in Halloween, and to prove it he brings Michael Myers back in this handsome but grisly sequel. Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode but spends most of her time cowering in a hospital gown, and Donald Pleasence runs around like a maniac as the panicky doctor desperate to hunt down Myers before he kills again. Carpenter writes and produces with partner Debra Hill, and together they replace the mystery and uncertainty of the original with an exponentially bigger body count and some strange tales about the Druids and pagan ceremonies, and the now-familiar family ties between Michael and Laurie. First-time director Rick Rosenthal (Bad Boys) paces the film at a brisk jog and directs it with a clean, crisp style, taking the murders out of the dark to display them in all their nasty detail. –Sean Axmaker

Picks up right where the original left off. by B. Nallick
The horror continues and it should have ended the series after this one.
Buy you know Hollywood????????
Any chance to milk a franchise to death and they’ll do it.
Is this as good as the first? No.
It’s a good continuation of the first one.
The classic cast is back and the story is great.
However……….. H2 starts to go in a more typical horror direction with this one and every one after it.
Less intense thriller than the first and more of a typical Hollywood bloodbath.
The intensity is lost among the increasing body count.
More blood, more gore, less brilliance.
They messed with the music too, not as scary, not as effective.
Still, a must see for fans of the original and the last decent one in the series until Halloween H20.

Got What I Wanted by Rachel M. Rivera-walton
I always wanted the whole collection of halloween and ordering it from amazon was a great, recieved all of the movies really quick.

Good Sequel by Derrick Dunn
What makes Hallowen II a good a slasher sequel is that director Rick Rosenthal had a lot of help from the films writers Debra Hill and John Carptener. The hosptial setting gives the film a dark atmopshere and although the film isn’t as scary it’s fun.

The Nightmare has just begun… by Jigsaw
I love HALLOWEEN II! I love how it takes place right after the original ended! Michael has been shot six times by Dr. Loomis, but he gets up and walks away! Loomis continues his hunt and Laurie Strode is taken to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital. Michael stalks the hospital in search for Laurie. Loomis finds out something about Michael that he NEVER knew. I love the showdown at the ending with Michael, Loomis, and Laurie. HALLOWEEN II is a treat for any and all fans of HALLOWEEN, horror, and slashers!

What a disappointment. by ADRIENNE MILLER
Halloween II starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence picks up right where the original left off. This seuqel is a complete letdown, the actors look bored and robotic and the twist ending just about killed it for me. Stick to the original and leave this one to rot!

The Seventh SignSeas boil, heavens fall, and Demi Moore takes a candlelit bath in this effective apocalyptic chiller. The prosthetic-enhanced Moore plays a pregnant nonbeliever whose baby may hold the key to impending Armageddon. Logic is not exactly the strong point in this well-acted, stylish, theological grab bag, but the random collection of horrific images manages to work more often than not. An acceptable time waster for fans of The Omen and The Exorcist. Also starring Michael Biehn (The Terminator), the always welcome John Heard in a brief cameo, and the exceptional Jürgen Prochnow as a mysterious stranger who could either be from the extreme North or way, way down South. –Andrew Wright

One of those Sleeper Movies by Jarron Remington
The Seventh Sign is one of those Sleeper Movies you hear about. It might take two or three times watching it before you start to realize the deeper implications. Unfortunately most people now, don’t have the time, or the attention span to sit through a movie more than once, but I can honestly say that it’s one of my favorites. When I first saw it, I was still in my teens and it stuck with me. I have a copy on video and now a copy on dvd. A lot of people won’t understand or get the biblical references and inferences, but my advice would be to just sit back and watch. It is creepy, surreal, and, ultimately, a movie of sacrifice that leaves you wondering what you would do. Demi Moore was really beautiful as Abby.

Hideously bad. by The Only Reviewer That Matters
Demi Moore’s tortured screams of “Noooo! Noooo!” at the end of this garbage heap of a film were very appropriate, since that is exactly what I was thinking after realizing I had wasted 90 minutes of my life on this incomprehensible nonsense.

Movie by Beverley Malcolm
T;he Seventh Sign movie and the movie called just plain Seven are both good movies.

Not like HorrorMan “HM” Described by Scott C. Meeker
It’s just a movie and it’s not meant to (nor does it claim to) be based on the actual book of Revelation, which in and of itself may very well be “fantasy.” Don’t take yourself too dang serious.
This film has dream-like imagery and an understandable plot if you keep it simple and don’t try to base it on (or compare to) your religion.

I don’t agree with the negative reviews, but I certainly understand.

Peace.

“I came as the lamb but I return as the lion.” by Trevor Willsmer
The Seventh Sign, a surprisingly effective piece of Apocalyptic guf from the days when Demi Morre’s breasts were still real and she could still play likeable characters. It’s quite shameless in the way it invents additional verses to the Bible to support its hotchpotch of apocalyptic predictions and throws in elements from everything from The Wandering Jew to Rosemary’s Baby, yet it all works surprisingly well, mostly because the cast and director Carl Schultz take it completely seriously, even pulling off a surprisingly touching ending. Clearly the Fundamentalists were too busy threatening to firebomb the theatres playing The Last Temptation that season to note the film’s own unique interpretation of a p***ed-off Christ who has lost all patience with humanity: “I came as the lamb but I return as the lion.”

No extras, but a fairly good 2.35:1 widescreen transfer.

Although the mood is too sinister to allow for the mischief of his Pirates of the Caribbean turn, Depp still manages to embroider his role here with plenty of quirky business. He plays a writer, depressed and nearly divorced, who’s stuck in an isolated cabin (shades of The Shining) when a stranger (John Turturro) arrives, accusing him of plagiarism. Writer-director David Koepp (Stir of Echoes) does his best to make the rickety material compelling–he gets the maximum out of the cabin set, for instance–but the problems inherent in the King story eventually win out. The climactic scenes are particularly unpleasant, especially in contrast to the cleverness of Depp’s performance. A Philip Glass score adds class, but this one ultimately feels like a disappointment. –Robert Horton

THERE WAS A SECRET HERE? by Mark Turner
I used to love reading Stephen King novels. Then somewhere along the way, it seemed to me that he got too caught up in his own hype. Rather than tell a story that kept me captivated, he began to lengthen the stories by adding so much detail that I found I didn’t care after so many pages. That being said, I never read the story that this movie was based on. And after having watched it, I am glad that I didn’t.

Johnny Depp plays Mort Rainey, a writer of mysteries who begins the movie confronting his wife Amy (Maria Bello) in bed with her lover Ted (Timothy Hutton) at the local motel. Fast forward six months and we find Mort asleep in his cabin by the lake. With writer’s block setting in, Mort is confronted one morning by a tall country bumpkin who calls himself John Shooter (John Turturro).

Shooter accuses Rainey of stealing his story, one called THE SECRET WINDOW. And now he wants Rainey to give it back to him with full credit. Rainey argues with him and turns his back on Shooter. But when he leaves, Mort opens the door to find Shooter’s manuscript on the porch. In reading it, he finds that the story is almost identical, word for word, to the one he had written years before.

Another face off between the two comes the following day. When Mort asks Shooter when he wrote his story, he informs him that that date was two years after the story was published. Shooter offers him a chance to prove him wrong by presenting him a copy of the book within the next three days. Mort later finds his dog killed, a screwdriver sticking out of him, proof from Shooter that he means business.

Contacting the local police against Shooter’s written command, Mort finds little help. When he talks to his soon to be ex-wife, he ends up doing nothing but regurgitating old arguments and opening old wounds. Mort turns to a private detective (Charles Dutton) he has used before when he dealt with a rabid fan of his novels. Dutton agrees to look into it as well as the cabin.

Mort is contacted again and again by Shooter, who makes a point of never being seen. And with each visit, Mort is set on edge, wondering if anything will get this man off of his back and out of his life. When his wife’s house is burned to the ground, the house where he had a copy of the magazine the story was published in, he begins to wonder if even offering the proof will stop Shooter.

There is more going on here than meets the eye. Subtle hints of the real story are strewn throughout, giving clues as to the real person behind it all and the motivations as well. Fans of mysteries will catch these early on while everyone else will be left wondering. Perhaps I have seen too many films and read too many novels, but I knew who was behind it all within the first 15 minutes of the film. And this was what made it a bad movie for me.

A mystery should keep the viewer held captive in their seat as they try to solve the riddle posed to them. The amazing thing to me about this movie was that not only was I able to figure it out, I felt that I had seen a number of stories based around this theme time and time again. I was stunned that a story about plagiarism actually felt like a plagiarized story. I don’t know where, but I have seen this tale before.

The movie itself was well made and enjoyable to watch. Depp has proven that he is more than just a pretty face, although that is more than enough for fans like my wife. The sign of a good actor is one who can make you believe that they are the character and not an actor portraying one. Depp has that ability.

For those who aren’t jaded by seeing too many filmed mysteries or having reads too many, this movie will provide you with a nice evening out. But for fans of the genre, it will result in watching and waiting for the revelation to come out knowing the answer well in advance.

Hollywood does good with this King story. by B. Nallick
Johnny Depp, you just have to admire the guy.
He can turn any role into something brilliant.
He certainly did in this movie.
From start to finish, interesting, memorable, fun from start to finish.
The ending really didn’t surprise me all that much.
I never read the story, but I’ve read so much of King’s work, I knew what the ending would be halfway through the movie.
Still, it’s a clever and twisty movie with the usual knockout performance from Depp.
Recommended.

How many of you out there have had a relationship end because your partner fooled around on you behind your back? I don’t expect anyone to answer that question because I know how embarrassing even being asked that can be.

Since today seems to be my day to make people uncomfortable, I’ll try again.

How many of you writers out there have had someone accuse you of plagiarizing their work? Not me. I’ll tell you that up front, because even rumors of that kind of thing can ruin a writer’s career.

Morton Rainy, played by Johnny Depp, has both of those problems. Add to that the ingredient that Rainey is emotionally a wreck due to the intense pain from his divorce and you have a ticking time bomb. Depp is rapidly becoming one of my favorite actors to watch. First he was incredibly funny as the nutty buccaneer in Pirates of the Caribbean and now he flawlessly plays a clever, charming, emotionally dissolving man. “Secret Garden” could almost have been called the Johnny Depp show.

The guy accusing Depp of “Stealing” his story is John Shooter, played by John Turturro. If anything is weak about this movie it was Turturro’s portrayal of Shooter. To make it plain, He just wasn’t scary at all.

Johnny Depp carries this movie and does it magnificently. He is edgy, full of rage, lazy, distraught and funny. It’s not very easy doing all those emotions in one motion picture, but he pulls it off.

There is one other star of “Secret Window.” David Koepp directed this movie and did a good job of it. He was also the screenwriter and that’s where he really shined. If you’ve read “Secret Window, Secret Garden,” by Stephen King you’ll recognize the story of “Secret Window.” But Koepp weaved some surprises into his film using the original story elements that were very startling.

I give “Secret Window” a rating of 4 out of 5, only marked down because of Turturro’s non-menacing John Shooter. He really could have done better.

If you like Stephen King’s fiction, you should see this movie. I consider it one of the best of his adaptations. If you are a writer who likes King’s work and have read “Secret Window, Secret Garden” it would be a crime if you don’t see “Secret Window” with Johnny Depp as the slightly psychotic Morton Rainey.

If I hadn’t seen that “Secret Window” was adapted from a Stephen King story I wouldn’t have been surprised. This flick just smacks of deja vu. It’s not bad King but it’s not particularly great. The blocked writer in a remote setting with murder and mayhem ensuing is just so familiar. What elevates the film beyond the mundane are game performances by Johnny Depp as the harried writer and John Turturro delivering an inspired turn straight from “Night of the Hunter”. Maria Bello looks hot but essentially wasted. Forgettable in the near extreme.

The Spy Who Came in from the ColdJohn le Carre’s classic spy yarn gets a suitably brisk, unromanticized telling in this quintessential Cold War movie. A British agent (Richard Burton) sets up an elaborate cover story for being lured into defecting to the Communists, but he hardly needs to manufacture his disgust and cynicism over spying. The grim business of point-counterpoint espionage has rarely been depicted with less glamour; Burton’s great climactic speech on the subject is the definitive take on sinking to the level of the enemy. Claire Bloom is an offbeat love interest, and a bearded Oskar Werner is an East German investigator on Burton’s case (the pecking order in the Communist spy hierarchy is a source of black humor). Director Martin Ritt extends his unvarnished approach to the movie’s stripped-down look, which means that Richard Burton is constantly in a harsh, unflattering light. He looks terrible, but it’s in the service of a fine performance. –Robert Horton

5 stars for The Spy Who Came In From The Cold by movie fan
This movie makes you feel like you are back in the cold war era. The main character’s life and job are nothinglike James Bond or other fictional glamorous spies. This is a real person, flaws and all, struggling to do his very best to fight for what he believes in. And Richard Burton plays this character perferctly. It shows the changes he goes thru and the how forces he can’t see or control affect his life. I highly recommend this movie for someone who wants to experience the cold war instead of a lot of special effects and car crashes.

Classic cold-war thriller by Stratiotes Doxha Theon
Classic cold-war thriller that portrays the sacrifice of the individual for the good of the state. The Richard Burton character is involved in a mission to frame an opposite spy and in the end finds himself also expendable to that same cause. Rich undertones of the cold war chill and it’s cost. Very well done and an excellent choice in Mr. Burton for this intense ambiguous role.

grim story accurately portrayed by it
This is an adaptation of the first popular novel by John le Carre (David Cornwell) who served in MI6 just after WWII. If you are easily depressed avoid this one. Otherwise it is close to the things that actually happened in that time frame.

The woman judge is modeled after a real person. She was from the German Aristocracy and was an opportunist who embraced the communist cause for what she could get from it. In stark contrast, her brother aided MI6 in WWII by being the source of the Oslo Report about German technological develoments.

More than a spy thriller by R. Swanson
As in all of LeCarre’s works, there is a lot more shown than the machinations of Cold War espionage. The human element is always there. As much as the spies try to suppress their more human feelings in order to carry out their difficult missions, sooner or later they have to deal with them. That’s what I find fascinating, rather than the plot complications of the spy business. Spy story fans will think differently. Here you don’t have to choose–you get both.

Richard Burton gives a superb performance as the burnt-out, cynical spy who has lost any reason to do anything but drink. He claims not to do what he did for idealistic reasons and has nothing but contempt for his trade. He’s offered a desk job in London after having been pulled in from active work in Berlin, but the safety of pushing papers doesn’t appeal to him, either, so he takes it. He needs money and really has nothing better to do.

In the process of building an identity as a disaffected British spy, ready to defect to the Communists, he stumbles into a job as an assistant clerk in a library. There he meets an idealistic young woman (Claire Bloom) who believes that the Communist party is the answer to the world’s problems–his polar opposite. Even as he scorns her naivetee, he falls for her sweetness and caring and promises to return to her after this one last job.

Complications ensue, as they do in complex spy stories and the outcome is truly a memorable one. The librarian’s touching love for him has brought him out of his cynicism long enough to perform one truly heroic, human act. She has brought him in from the cold.

Burton’s presence is so commanding that he held my interest during the elaborate twists and turns of plot. Bloom plays the idealistic young woman perfectly; it’s a role one could easily over play but she carries it off with great subtlety. Oskar Werner, no lightweight himself, brings addition spark when he enters the picture. As impressive as Burton is, Werner hold his own with him in every scene; they are perfect sparring partners.

The black and white gritty photography, the bleakness of the scenes, the music, all add to the mood of the film, a reminder of a very grim and dangerous time in our history. The emergence of human caring at the end bring a spark of light to the darkness–that’s the genius of LeCarre and that’s what I’ll carry with me from this film.

Superb adaptation by W. Brown
Having read the novel by LeCarre, I can’t imagine anyone but Richard Burton as the burnt-out false defector Alec Leamas. The black-and-white of this film underscores the shades of gray in the moral no-man’s-land in which Leamas takes on the most difficult, most insidious assignment of his trying career as a spy. The jacket of this edition of the film says “forget James Bond,” a very apt line for what’s inside. This film is made with raw, real suspense, fine acting, and excellent cinematography. There are no “super-spies,” no gadgets, no kung-fu stunts, only the subtleties of people keeping secrets upon secrets. If you want to be cheered or excited, this is not your stop. But if you want to see brilliant work in film, check this one out.

The ContenderDepending on your perspective, The Contender can be praised and damned for the same reasons. A political thriller with an insider’s view, it’s deadly earnest in its defense of truth, justice, and the American way, but writer-director (and former film critic) Rod Lurie resorts to the same manipulation that his film purports to condemn. But with political savvy, a timely idea (a female vice president), and a cast of first-rate actors, this high-office chess game is unabashedly entertaining. You can argue with Lurie’s tactics, but you can’t fault his patriotic passion.

In a role written especially for her, Joan Allen is outstanding (if a bit too saintly) as the Republican-turned-Democrat senator who is chosen by the president (Jeff Bridges) to fill a vice presidential vacancy. Bridges is a cagey chief executive, seemingly aloof as he gleefully challenges the White House’s 24-hour kitchen staff but more than a match for the embittered and unscrupulous congressman (Gary Oldman) who plots to destroy Allen’s character with seemingly dark secrets from her past.

As a gender-switching response to the Lewinsky scandal, The Contender asks potent questions with its impassioned plea for integrity in public service. That makes this a film well worth defending, and the stellar cast (which includes Christian Slater and William Petersen) triumphs over most of the plot’s hokey machinations. The ideas are more compelling than their execution, however, and although Lurie’s climactic revelation is a vast improvement over the reckless cheat of his previous film Deterrence, it still threatens to tarnish the gloss of an otherwise fascinating film. –Jeff Shannon

Gary Oldman, Joan Allen, Jeff Bridges and Christian Slater deliver electrifying performances in this controversial, suspenseful and critically-acclaimed thriller that Ebert & Roeper and the Movies call “exciting and unusually intelligent, two very enthusiastic thumbs up!” Sometimes you can assassinate a leader without firing a shot.

A remarkably unpleasant and dishonest film by J. C Clark
If you like American Theocracy, you will probably like this film. It plays to every stereotype, every simple-minded idea, every revisionist fantasy, every insulting smear and dishonest thing that the left has uttered for the past 50 years. Now, don’t get me wrong, it skillfully packages them in a lovely box with lots of pretty wrapping paper (recyclable, of course!), ornate bows, and a lovely card, but inside, it is unequivocally a steaming pile of horse puckey.

Others here have dissected the deceit and dishonesty rampant throughout this manure pile. But let me add one more. When our poor, unfairly maligned female is blindsided in an interview, she walks off. And we are to admire her fortitude. When the lying and creepy bad guy is publicly chastised by his President, who calls him a traitor for disagreeing, he walks out, and we are to see his walk of shame as the perfect summation of his pitiful little life. Wow–talk about hypocrisy!

Personally, I’d love to see Hollywood tackle a real confirmation hearing. Show us how Robert Bork or Clarence Thomas had their character murdered and then disemboweled, a tactic previously unknown in Washington. (What Democrat has ever received such an attack?) Come on, Hollywood, show how a real person standing up for what he believes will get the machete wielding liars with crazed eyes after him!

No, that would be too tough. Rather, let’s show a nice feminist atheist, whose poor little son is being indoctrinated by religious crazies to spout that baby Jesus created top spin, who believes we need military might only to intervene in the internal affairs of other countries, who, quite wrongly, believes that the never-mentioned-in-the-Constitution separation of church and state is to protect the state from fanaticism, who, I suppose, believes that babies aborted but living should be allowed to die, all the while with stirring patriotic music soaring behind her. The aroma is overwhelming! I’m choking!

Update September 2008:
And folks, in case you haven’t noticed, while one side says the other is using “coded messages” to attack their candidate, that same side shows no such restraint and heaps the uncoded messages against a woman. Wow–if only the film makers had examined their prejudices, they might have made a real movie!

Man, those Democrats are a noble lot by Daniel B. Yoe
As a political independent I really don’t have much of a problem believing that the Republicans in Congress are the uncaring, sneaky bunch of politicians they are portrayed as in this film. What I don’t buy at all, though, is the Democrats in Congress being the truthful, caring, altruistic bunch they’re portrayed as here. For me, this film simply confirms the fact that the Hollywood elites are no more than a wing of the Democrat Party when it comes to political movies. The premise of this movie is, in a word, ridiculous. Pity really, as the acting and production are both pretty good. Even liberals should be offended by the simplistic pandering offered up in this pathetic outing. Two thumbs down.

Rich Cast and Story by John Mozuke
This was a really good movie. The casting was just perfect (even Christian Slater who was the weakest of the selections). I found the story very interesting and the performances were fantastic. I recommend it to any intelligent film fan.

Campaign 2008 by Bradley F. Smith
I guess this came out in 01, but watching it in 2008 is interesting, now that Hillary Clinton’s campaign is over. This film is over the top in portraying partisanship, and way too preachy about the main character’s rights as a woman to be treated like a man. Jeff Bridges is entertaining as the president. Hell, he should probably run. Given recent history like the Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill hearings, and such fiascos as the Bush nomination of Harriet Myers to the Supreme Court, the goings on in this movie are not entirely implausible.

The Contender by Lisa Thomas
This is the most amazing movie. Barack Obama was recently asked which movie he felt had the best presidential performance. He responded, “Jeff Bridges in The Contender”. A must see movie. Love the price and I received it timely.

Well-directed psychological thriller by z hayes
“The Hole” is an interesting psychological thriller that revolves around a teen from a British prep school, Liz Dunn [Thora Birch] who is the sole survivor of a horrible tragedy where her three friends, Desmond Harrington[Mike], Keira Knightley[ Frankie], and Laurence Fox[Geoff] died. The four of them had skipped a geography field trip in favor of a private party in an old underground bunker. 18 days later, only Liz is left alive to tell the story of what truly happened.

To unravel the truth of what happened, psychologist Dr Horwood [Embeth Davidtz] tries to get Liz to tell her story.Liz pins the blame on Martin [Daniel Brocklebanc], a computer geek and fellow student whom she says locked them in the hole. The police arrest him, but Liz’s POV is later questioned by Dr Horwood when her initial story has all four of the teens coming out of ‘the hole’ after four days, alive and well.

When Martin is questioned by the police, he gives a totally different version of the events, and it is interesting to see how Liz’s and Martin’s POV’s differ, leaving the viewer to piece the real story of what happened.

This is a credible psychological thriller that takes us into the deep recesses of one troubled teen’s mind and the lengths to which a person will go to satisfy an obsession. The lead actor, Thora Birch plays her character very well, and though her British accent is less than authentic, she credibly portrays a disturbed teen. So does Daniel Brocklebanc as Martin, the supposed pyschopath. I felt Keira Knightley did an ok job as the lusted after Frankie, and this was definitely one of her lesser roles, before the fame that came with movies like “Bent It Like Beckham”, “Pride and Prejudice” and “Atonement”. The other two actors who played the character of Mike and Geoff were average and their roles were forgettable.

There is some nudity in this movie, though not quite one would expect. As another reviewer has mentioned, having Keira Knightley on the cover of the DVD was misleading as her role isn’t as big as Thora Birch’s. There really isn’t any gore in this, just some bloody scenes. The menace in this movie is in the atmosphere- the creepiness of the underground bunker, the psychological torment experienced by the characters trapped in the hole, and of course, the menace radiated by the perpetrator. Final verdict: a highly watchable and engrossing thriller that probes the dark recesses of a troubled mind.

Directors Need to Ask for Directions by Pablo Martin Podhorzer
***Possible SPOILERS ahead*** Tale of a group of spoiled-rich teenagers getting into a hole and having problems to getting out of it. It is composed of two movements: a short straight story that is really scary and is resolved by an “act of god”, and a second very weak part which transforms one of the characters from an innocent nerd into a minor Kayzer Sosze. From the moment the second version of the story appears the script starts to tumble down the stairs until it get wrapped in muddy waters (literally). This `crazy-mastermind’ part is unbelievable and is left unresolved with a wink to spectators that don’t ask for much. I would let this pass and consider this film as a minor effective entertainment if not for the fact that the final scenes between the psychologist and the crazy student which reveals the truth are badly managed and fail to produce tension or lasting horror.

What happens in the bunker stays in the bunker by Daniel Jolley
Before she was engaging in who-can-wear-more-mascara contests with Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley was trapped in a bunker with Thora Birch and two guys for 18 days. I expected this to be a film about four teens trapped in an underground bunker trying to survive as days turn into weeks (two and a half to be exact), but that really isn’t what The Hole is all about. That fact becomes obvious in the opening scene, as we watch a haggard survivor emerge and shuffle her way back to safety. Once she begins telling her story, I thought the rest of the movie would just be one big flashback leading us back to the present - wrong again. The plot to this film is much more dark and insidious as all that - and, while it’s not problem-free, I think the film is all the better for it. This is very much a psychological thriller which almost succeeds magnificently - almost. And, as unlikely as it may sound, the story plays off the kinds of emotions all of us have experienced - to some degree - at some point in our lives. Stripped down to the very bone, what you have here is a love story.

So here are your choices: go along on a boring school field trip, spend a tedious weekend at home, or sneak away to an underground bunker to party with Keira Knightley and Thora Birch for three days. I’m a claustrophobic non-rebel, but I would be totally down (pun intended) with hunkering in the bunker. It certainly seemed like a good idea to Liz Dunn (Birch) because it would give her a chance to spend some quality time with the suddenly available apple of her eye, Mike Steel (Desmond Harrington). As she eventually tells the psychologist assigned to her (Embeth Davitz), her friend Martyn (Daniel Brocklebank) - one of those unethical brainiacs who can make anything happen - arranged the whole thing, after Mike, Frankie (Knightley), and Geoff (Laurence Fox) solicited his help in getting away for the weekend without either the school or their parents knowing about it. The plan was a smashing success - except for the fact that Martyn never showed up to unlock the door and let them out. Clearly, Martyn is the guilty party.

But wait a minute - it’s not as simple as all that. Martyn insists that he had nothing to do with any of it, and through him a much different version of events emerges, one that significantly redefines the characters of Liz and Frankie. Whatever your suspicions, you as the viewer don’t really know who or what to believe, especially since you have yet to be told exactly what happened to Mike, Frankie, and Geoff (in fact, I have a little problem with the fact that some of the initial implications are misleading and leave you asking obvious questions you later find out you needn’t have asked). Even after it becomes obvious that one character in particular is not telling the whole story, the sense of mystery remains until the end, when the fates of all are finally revealed. There’s just something about the ending that left me unsatisfied, though - not in terms of everything that took place in the bunker (although one key event was rather obviously foreshadowed early on), but definitely in the way things play out above ground. That is why, as much as I want to give The Hole five stars in recognition of its creative storytelling prowess and bevy of strong performances, I just can’t do it. It’s most unfortunate because I really do love this movie.

I do not like the DVD cover featuring the close-up of Keira Knightley, though. For one thing, she doesn’t look anything like this in the movie, but more importantly, this movie is really all about Thora Birch. Knightley’s good, but it is the commanding presence of Birch that largely defines the film as a whole. With a less capable actress in the lead role, The Hole could have come off as laughably bad. A subtle facial expression can oftentimes say more than a drawn-out soliloquy, and Birch is unarguably a complete actress. She can be the girl next door and, at the same time, reveal traces of a hidden dark side - and that makes her not only mysteriously seductive but sexy as hell to those of us who like a little bit of evil in our girls.

Going into the hole by SpiritChild
At the start of the film we see an exhausted zombie like Birch walking back on campus (after escaping the hole). She and 3 friends (looking for a fun place to party) got trapped in a WW2 bunker. But how did it happen? The movie takes us through 2 interesting versions of what happened.

The hole features some talented unknown actors/actresses (except Knightly ofcourse, who is well known). The characters are interesting, and the music is very good too. However, the story is a little unbelievable, leaving some watchers with many “why did they do that?” questions. My advice is to not ask yourself “why did she/he do that”. The characters do alot of things that don’t make sense and you will enjoy the movie alot more if you just forget about the flaws.

This isn’t a bad movie, but you will enjoy it alot more if you have low expectations

Thriller fans need to take this dark ride by Ken Jensen
This was one cool flick. Pri - tee darn horrifying what takes place down in that hole, especially as the truth unfolds. There’s something extra poignant watching the priviledged lose control of their magic kingdom and suffer the worst by way of some malfunctioning mind’s doings. The plot builds as the clock ticks and you become aware you’re not really sure of just what happened down there. As you figure it out, you are introduced to one warped a** psyche. If you’re a fan of disturbing fare, dig in.
